Congressman MacArthur Cosponsors Bipartisan Bills to Improve Care for Seniors and Honor their Contributions to Local Communities

Statement

Today, Congressman MacArthur announced he has cosponsored two bipartisan bills that will improve care for seniors and recognize their volunteer work in their local communities. Congressman MacArthur's district is home to more than 140,000 residents over 65 years of age. This is the highest senior population of any congressional district in New Jersey and one of the highest in the entire United States.

"My district is home to over 140,000 seniors who provide much needed services to their communities and who deserve the best care possible," said Congressman Tom MacArthur. "These bipartisan bills will ensure we're protecting our seniors against elder abuse and honor senior volunteers who continue to give back to South Jersey. Seniors are an important part of our community and I'll continue to work across the aisle and fight for them in Congress."

Bipartisan legislation includes:

Resolution recognizing the contributions of senior volunteers, including Senior Corps, Foster Grandparents, and RSVP volunteers. Original Sponsor: Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-OR)

In New Jersey, there are 5,100 Senior Corp volunteers, 1,200 young people tutored by Foster Grandparents, and 460 local organizations benefiting from RSVP volunteers.

Senior Citizen Protection Act which requires the Department of Justice (DOJ) to establish guidelines for states to design and implement elder abuse registries. Original Sponsor: Rep. Bradley Scott Schneider (D-IL)
